
With a fascination for microbes and an eye for observation and detail, David Kerr started his career studying Microbiology at Kent University. Continuing on for four years of Postgraduate Research in Electron Microscopy at the Botany School Oxford University and taking micrographs for Oxford Scientific Films, David then submitted photographs to beat 5,000 applicants to win 1 of 25 places at the UK’s prestigious National Film and Television School. He graduated in 1988 with the BAFTA nominated film “WATER’S EDGE”.
This background and interest in science, combined with his innate creativity, has given David a solid technical knowledge and an appreciation for the unusual in framing and detail.
His work in commercials is in high demand by Advertising Agencies, where he has helped define some of the world’s most easily recognizable brands like BT, Mercedes and Nestle. He has shot commercials for McDonalds and the John Smith’s campaign which were D&AD nominated
In addition to commercials, David has shot several award winning films, including the Independent Feature, “SINNER” (2007) directed by Marc Benardout which is distributed by Matson Films and also aired on The Showtime Network. Shot in Los Angeles, it won ‘Best Cinematography Award’ at the Brooklyn Arts Council International Film and Video Festival; and Grand Jury Best Feature, Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, along with many other awards.
His Production Company - Empire State Films - based in Brighton, UK, free from commercial constraints, is able to concentrate on independent short films, webverts and virals. It continues to grow from strength to strength, and has won with “GOING GREEN” the Sky Green Shoots Short Film Competition (2008)
Based in the UK , he has an O-1 Visa for the USA.
